The Antidiuretic Activity in Sera of Emotionally Stressed Individuals.


Abstract
It is well known fact that antidiuretic activity is usually enhanced by many factors including dehydration, elevated blood osmotic pressure, contraction of extracellular fluid volume, elevated blood pressure, and stress such as noise, painful stimuli and also emotional stimuli.
Claude Bernard was the first man who stated that emotional stmulus may cause the inhibition of water diuresis. Eversince then, many investigators including Rydin and Verney, Mirsky, Ames and Van Dyke, and others proved that noxious stimuli can produce an increased antidiuretic activity in many laboratory animals and in man. By this paper, author intended to prove the fact whether antidiuretic activity is also increased or not when the patients or cases are exposed to stressful situation. The cases, supposed to be. received emotional stresses, were selected from the patients admitted in surgical department of Korean Electric Co. Hospital, Air Force Hospital and from the volunteers of Airman.
Female albino rats, weighing 150.200 g, were fed on the national. laboratory of chemistry stock diet and tamed for proper laboratory use. Each rat, at the end of 16 hour period of starvation, received 5.0. ml of 2% NaCl solution per 100g of body weight through a polyethylene gastric tube and repeated three times with one hour intervals. Immediately after the third oral hydration, an indwelling urinary catheter was inserted and the amount of urine excreted every 5 minutes were determined.
Emotionally stable, normotensive healthy human adult sera were injected intraperitoneally to the above hydrated rat but it induced no inhibition of urinary excretion. However a marked antidiuretic activities were observed when one milliliter of serum from the patients with preoperative stress was injected; this effect was lost after the patient¢¥s emotional state returned to normal. When one milliliter of serum from the volunteers who supposed to be exposed to the emotional stress were injected, marked antidiuretic responses were noted.
